Copernicia macroglossa

The “Cuban Petticoat palm” is truly unmistakable. Its dark green, dense, erect leaf crown seemingly sits atop very densely packed, pan caking  layers of dead leaves which form the “petticoat”. The palm only grows to about 20 feet however with its petticoat which all the way to the ground can be 15 feet wide, so while interesting and dramatic it does need quite a bit of room. Its salt tolerant hailing from the savannahs and salt marshes of Cuba survives marginally in zone 9 b and thrives in zones10 & 11 requires sun and well drained soil.
