Johannesteismania altifrons
The “Joey palm” or diamond joey as it is also sometimes called is a unique and highly ornamental palm that is a lot more cold hardy than most people think and can even sustain temperatures of freezing for short periods of time. It has a subterranean trunk and a cluster of up to about 25 leaves that are a medium green on both sides of the leaf appearing to come straight up out of the ground with the center leaf in the cluster sometimes reaching 20 feet tall, it requires shade, extremely well drained soil and the books say they need a rich humus laden soil but we have found that they do quite well in extremely fast draining alkaline soils.
